SONIC TECH NOTE SERIES TAIL SHAFT OIL LEAK ON MA-60 FILE NAME TNSLEAK.txt Sept 2/96 Hi guys. Here is a new one for you guys. Just talked with a good friend that is a local SONIC member. His 83 MA67 has leaked oil from the rear tail shaft of his 5 speed since he purchased the car new. Toyota gave up putting seals in on warranty when the car was new. And he also gave up. Out put bushing like new seals like new, were new, dam thing still leaked on his driveway. I told him years ago that this was not a common problem. Well. Well, he fixed it last week. On the drive shaft in the tranny input spine there is a plug at the end of the yoke where the factory machining tools go in. This plug is like a frost plug in an engine block. The oil was leaking down the spines and out the drive shaft yoke. Very easy to fix. He used JB weld, put the yoke in the vise, and let the JB weld run into the plug by heating the JB weld to make it run and presto, the 10 year problem solved for good. This same member has redone his MA-67 chrome trim around the seat backs. On older MA-60's this gets all cracked and starts to look lousy. He has used chrome plastic door edge trim purchased from Canadian Tire. I had thought this would work but never tried it out. It does I have not seen the results but I will look at it on the Sept 29 fun run, he is coming out.
