An inside look at RCTS CANADA's Map Tuning for 2JZ-GTE, 7M-GTE and HKS
VPC by Reg Riemer

Tech Notes on RCTS CANADA Rom Boards and Software for 7M-GTE, 2JZ-GTE
and HKS VPC
Introduction:
Almost one year to date from the time I purchased the Techtom hardware
and dealer program, I have completed testing and programming the 7M-GT
TCCS for a stage 2 level for use with the original Lexus upgrade developed
many years ago. This past year I worked very hard with my techtom gear
plugged into my old and favorite car, my 7M-GTE powered 1982 MK II MA-67
Supra GTE as well as my One Lap of America JZA-80.
My Supras!
82 Supra GTE
1994 One Lap Supra
I intend to work on these two engines for the rest of my life, this is
why I have the Techtom dealership!
I plan to be around when the governments of our countries say that all
of these muscle cars with parts hanging of of them are pollution pigs and
now they must meet newer pollution standards. There is no way that someone
is going to tell me I'm not allowed to drive my Supras. Because of this
looming worry, I will borrow some very well known thought processes
that were first used by my favorite car company Toyota back in the 1930ís
the principle and reasoning of Kaizen, or continuous improvement. By starting
work on this when we have we will be ready for big brother should this
day ever come.
The pictures of the laptop screen show the 7M-GTE ignition and fuel
maps as well as one of the tracing screens of the 7m-GTE TCCS maps outlining
comparisons of the ignition maps for the 7M-GTE stock and Lexus Stage 2
spec.
This new software has taken the original Lexus upgrade to a higher power
level with a full re-mapping of the fuel and ignition to allow for no change
in learned value system across the much higher load areas some of us run
these engines. The three register areas of the ROM data that Techtom Japan-(G-Force)
have already outlined in the code are still available. As well I
will be adding curb idle adjustment, O2 feedback table rescaling and a
few other areas are also in the mix with my software for the TechTom rom
boards for 7M-GT Lexus fuel upgrade.
I have now completed design and CNC manufacturing of the spacer plate
that I originally intended for use on the 89-92 7M-GTE as well as some
87 & 88 7M-GTE ECUS. The first production batch was ready on Feb 12/2002.
I have discovered that fitment of my spacer plate allows all of the 7M-GTE
ECU's to have more needed room in the computer to allow the RCTS dual or
single program rom board to fit inside the ECU without requiring the modifications
to re-locate a lot of parts inside the ECU. Also, the plate allows for
more heat dissipation inside the ECU. For these reasons I will be using
the spacer plates on all of the 7M-GTE ECU's. The plates also have a custom
CNC engraved RCTS logo and carry the Toyota factory fit and finish. Techtom
supplies a cast spacer for the dual board 2JZ-GTE TCCS but nothing has
been available for the 7M-GTE TCCS until now!

What the New Software Does:
I have identified a number of previously unknown maps and full registration
areas in the 7M-GTE TCCS. My blue GTE car ran many (too many, I felt sorry
for it a bit :-Q), 1.3 bar of boost runs on the track and open road. Sometimes
testing fuel-cut and load-cut point caused rubber to be left on the road
at 90 MPH! So far the gains have been amazing, ignition maps have made
great gains in my GTE car on the road, boost response is faster due to
more timing as much as 22 degrees more before spool up. With winter here
in full force, I have not been back to the Dynojet for RWHP numbers, I
will do this in the spring. However my old GTE car no longer hooks the
power of stage 2, with my stage 1 Lexus setup my car hooked well in all
gears. Now with my stage 2 ECU, tires can be scalded at will in 2nd or
3rd gear. Back to the drawing board in the suspension department, just
like my maiden voyage eight years ago when I first put the 7M-GTE in my
82.
See below for other areas I will be working on. Techtom Japan-(G-Force)
had already outlined register areas of the ROM data hex code for fuel-cut
and Rev Limit. RCTS has identified a number of previously unknown maps
and full registration areas in the 7M-GTE TCCS.
As of today the complete list of known Hex registration located is
as follows:
*Rev Limit (fully adjustable from 700rpm to 9000rpm+/- I can work out
the hex value and tell you exactly, 50rpm per hex number, hex FF max, Dec
255)
*Load-Cut (yes load cut, I can set it so my car will not make a hill
in third gear at one setting and make it up the hill, two number values
higher)
*Fuel-Cut (Yes, and it is fully adjustable from about 1 psi to no cut
at all)
*closed throttle deceleration fuel cut
*Cold Idle Open Loop Table
*Ignition Map (full 3D map x-Rpm y-Load)
*Open Loop lookup Map
*O2 Sensor Closed Loop Lookup Table
*Idle Speed Lookup Table
Dual Program's in one ECU available at the flip of a Switch:
The A program in the ECU can be what ever the Supra Nut wants., some possibility's
are;
-1 Valet Mode program, low rev limiter, 2500 RPM, or what ever you like
-2 Valet Mode program, low boost-cut point, .5 PSI, or what ever you
like
-3 Valet Mode program, low load-cut point, 5% to 30 % Duty Cycle, or
what ever you like
-4 Original Stock Toyota program as is just as if we have not opened
the TCCS
-5 Bad Gas program :-Q
-6 Race Gas Program (TBA)
-7 So your friend can win program, gut-less wonder Program, dead ignition
map, all map values 0 advance, Supra feels like a sick turtle, stuff this
little chip into your friends supra for an April fools day present :-)
-8 Your email suggestions on ideas for A programs
The B program will be for 91 octane or higher.
The boost-cut point on this program can be set to what the Supra owner
wants up to completely removed-(not recommended). Also the size of turbo
and the rpm boost start point can be set for ignition map. The load-cut
point will be set for 85 to 90 % duty cycle max for safety reasons.

7M-GTE TCCS Rom Boards and RCTS Software:
Re-programming the 7M-GT TCCS for a stage 2 level for use with the original
Lexus upgrade developed many years ago. We have been working very hard
with the techtom gear installed in the Blue 7M-GTE powered 1982 MK II MA-67,
The pictures of the laptop screens below show the 7M-GTE ignition and fuel
maps, as well as one of the tracing screens of the 7m-GTE TCCS maps.
This new software takes the original 550 Injector and Lexus AFM upgrade
to a higher level with addition of full re-mapping of the fuel and ignition
to allow for Toyota stock idle and street performance coupled with a much
higher load map and boost potential while still keeping the safety of the
fuel-cut at a higher than ever point.
The Supra GTE has been running up to 1.3 bar of boost on the track and
open road for the past 4 months, With countless hard 1.3 bar pulls on road
tests, making fine adjustments to the Ignition, Load Fuel-cut, Boost Fuel-cut
and Fuel maps, the gains from the software have done amazing things to
the old Supra GTE's already fantastic 7M-GTE performance.

2JZ-GTE Engine Software and Rom Board Installation:
TCCS ECU's in the 1994 & 1995 JZA-80 require two rom boards
for complete control. One board is for ignition mapping and boost management
for Twin Turbochargers and the another board for Fuel Mapping. The board
for Fuel Mapping is where the Hex Data is saved for Rev-Limiter, Speed-Limiter
and Trac registration these registration areas are located in the Fuel
board software hex file.
Development is in progress in Japan for Rom Boards for the 1996 to 1998
OBD II Supra ECU's, more on this as we get word on availability!
These Rom boards with good software made a huge difference to the performance
of the 2JZ-GTE when running larger single turbochargers. I have made a
number of changes to the software in my One Lap Supra, mainly in turbo
response and reduction of lag. The Ignition map for a Single turbo 2JZ-GTE
is completely different than the stock maps for the twins. Because the
stock ECU is expecting boost through the range that the single turbocharger
is still in lag, the extra ignition timing in this area helps pull up bottom
end turbo response. The Rev-Limiter can safely be raised to 7500 RPM with
a big single setup and power will continue to rise to the limit point.
We have run this for years of road racing with our One Lap Supra without
any problems. This adds about seven hundred RPM to the power band of the
7M-GTE. Dual programs for the 2JZ-GTE allow the comparisons of the stock
program to the custom one or like the notes above one of the two programs
could be a valet mode with low Rev-Limiter and so on.
Software for 2JZ-GTE with stock Turbos does not offer huge improvements
other than the Rev Limiter, Speed Limiter, and boost control using the
stock TT VSV system to raise the boost while retaining factory waste gate
control connections and hardware. However RCTS does not recommend more
than 1.1 Bar of boost on the Stock Twin turbos for any length of time.
Turbocharger damage will occur at these types of pressures with extended
operation and daily cycling! More on this at the SONiC site.
Here is a look at the 1994 2JZ-GTE Twin Turbo Stock Ignition Map

This 2JZ-GTE ignition map is a triple interleaved 3D Map. You can
feel the odd effects of this map best after you go to a big single turbo
setup. I'm sure many of you with big single turbo-ed 2JZ-GTE's have noticed
the effects of this map in action. Depending on where you start a boost
pull you will feel varied performance from your engine. Remember it was
designed for the stock twin turbos and they provided the engine with boost
in the low rpm ranges. A Bigger single turbo does not have boost
there so the ignition map for a single turbo such as the one in the One
Lap of America Supra is totally different.
HKS VPC software by RCTS CANADA
RCTS can change the VPC software in the following ways:
We can actively trace and (watch the VPC reading the EPROM software when
driving the car) Real time VPC chip tuning requires the vehicle to be at
RCTS, labor rates for tuning like this is 50.00 per hour. RCTS already
has a number of happy customers you could talk with for more info.
As well we can change VPC chips based on backwards Engineering the software
(not necessary to drive the car) by reading the file from the EPROM, then
by editing the areas of the maps to move VPC O'clock dial maps and data
around to meet specific VPC users requirements. The IDLE, GAIN and Option
Out areas of all the independent VPC Dial O'clock Maps can be changes so
the percentage change per click is more or less than the stock 2%. We can
move any dial map's from 6 O'clock to 12 O'clock or whatever. As well we
can make the range from 7 O'clock through to to 6 O'clock anything you
want richer or leaner in any degree of % increase per click.
Another example would be to leave 12 O'clock where it is and make the
percent change per click more than 2 percent say 5%, 10 %, 15% to help
get a car that is not close to tune, in tune. Or less than 2% or maybe
1% changes could be used to dial in a car that is already in very close
tune. This is very useful for anyone that may be running a engine with
some non HKS program mods, off brand injectors, different fuel pumps, fuel
lines, Camshafts and other engine mechanical changes. Because the VPC is
a pressure sensor based speed density system, changes in particular engines
cause the fixed HKS program to be too far off the scale to get the engine
running in perfect tune again. With custom chips you can then dial the
particular car in again to meet your requirements.
Some notes on the custom VPC software by RCTS CANADA:
-A For best results with VPC re-tuning this way you need to know where
you are with rich & lean under different conditions with your current
VPC chip.
-B Chip reading, editing and burning costs $250.00 USD for the first
chip and $95.00 USD for more sister chips if a series of chips is required.
